Leather puppetry preservation |
Leather puppetry is very old form of puppetry prevalent in all the southern states of India. These are flat puppets and made of leather. These are operated against the rear of a tightly stretched white screen with a light behind it, so that the audience look at the shadow of the puppet on the screen. The earliest reference to leather puppetry in India in the Mahabharata. India has the richest variety of types & styles of these puppets. Conservation of these puppets is a big challenge. Now Indian conservators have adopted well researched methods to preserve their awesome & unique treasure. Scientific preservation is being appreciated as an effort to keep the art & artists alive.
