MPs take oath as 17th Indian Parliament begins |
The first session of 17th Lok Sabha of Indian Parliament commenced on Monday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leading from the front, taking the first oath as Member. As soon as the House met, the Members stood in silence for a few minutes as per the convention after the assembling of the new Lok Sabha. The new session began with the playing of the National Anthem. When Modi`s name was called out, Members from the ruling NDA thumped the desk greeting the Prime Minister. The panel of presiding officers K Suresh, Brijbhushan Sharan Singh and B Mehtab took oath as Members after the Prime Minister. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Chemical and Fertilisers Minister D V Sadanand Gowda also took oath. Before the House met, Virendra Kumar was sworn in as Pro-tem Speaker by President Ramnath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan. In his first address, Narendra Modi emphasised on the essential role of the opposition in a democracy and said, "The opposition shouldn`t worry about their numbers. We value their opinions and feelings. I hope they will speak actively and participate in house proceedings."
