Masood Azhar designated as global terrorist by United Nations |
The founder and chief of Pakistan based Jaish-e-Mohammed, Masood Azhar has been designated as a global terrorist by the United Nation`s Security Council after China, which had earlier blocked many moves to blacklist Azhar, dropped its objections. The UN decision means a freeze on Masood Azhar`s finances and assets, a travel ban and an arms embargo. Masood Azhar`s terrorist outfit, Jaish-e-Mohammed took responsibility for Pulwama terror attack in India, in which 40 soldiers were martyred in February. Days after the Pulwama attack, the US, Britain and France pushed a fresh proposal in the Security Council``s 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee. Armed with veto powers in the UN Security Council, China blocked moves to blacklist Azhar, by placing a "technical hold" and asking for "more time to examine" the proposal. India`s permanent envoy to the UN, Syed Akbaruddin, tweeted on Wednesday, "Big, small, all join together. Masood Azhar designated as a terrorist in @UN Sanctions list... Grateful to all for their support." The diplomatic victory comes in the middle of the national election in India, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pitched his government`s aggressive anti-terror efforts and national security focus.
