Massive win for BJP in 17th Lok Sabha elections |
The charisma and magic of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi finished what was left of the Opposition in the elections five years ago, decimating the opposition of Congress and the Mahagathbandhan in the 17th Lok Sabha elections, with its numbers closing in on 350 figure mark. The National Democratic Alliance was leading in 345 seats, in which the BJP itself is all set to cross the 300 mark. The swearing-in-ceremony is expected to be held with much pomp and show by the end of the week. With Thursday`s stupendous electoral triumph, PM Modi emerged as the first Indian Prime Minister since Indira Gandhi to pull off an election on his own and win a second consecutive majority. The Modi tsunami was such that Congress scion and party chief Rahul Gandhi lost his home turf of Amethi, in Uttar Pradesh. Speaking after the poll debacle, Rahul Gandhi congratulated PM Modi and said that his was a fight of ``ideology`` which will continue, but the people of the country has chosen ``Narendra Modi to be their leader`` and he respected their mandate. The Congress, which had been confined to a meagre 44 seats in 2014, could manage to improve its tally by only eight seats.
