Mercury at 49°C as brutal heatwave sweeps North India |
The scorching heatwave baked north India on May 16th as the mercury soared and breached the 49-degree mark. The maximum temperature crossed 49 degrees Celsius in parts of Delhi on May 15th as heatwave conditions swept northwest and central India. The temperature was recorded at 49.2°C in northwest Delhi`s Mungeshpur and 49.1°C in southwest Delhi`s Najafgarh. The Safdarjung observatory recorded 45.6 degrees Celsius, the highest so far this season. Safdarjung temperature is considered the official figure for Delhi. Meanwhile, heatwave conditions gripped Rajasthan state, with several districts recording temperatures above 47 degrees Celsius. Churu and Hanumangarh were the hottest places in Rajasthan, recording 47.9 degrees Celsius each. The states of Haryana, the Western part of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are very likely to experience dust storms and thunderstorms on 16th May, while a mild dust storm is likely over the remaining parts of Punjab, Haryana, west Uttar Pradesh and in isolated pockets of Delhi NCR.
