Modi again: Exit polls |
With all phases of the elections successfully completed, exit polls have started doing rounds in the Indian Media. Most exit polls have predicted the return of BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. Majority of news channels have predicted between 276 to 336 seats for NDA, 82 to 164 for Congress-led UPA and 104 to 138 for others. Many exit polls have predicted BJP to win 227 to 291 seats. If the BJP is able to cross the 280 seat mark, then it would only be the second party after Congress to win simple majority in two successive elections. It was also projected that NDA will make major inroads in West Bengal and Odisha – with one poll even suggesting it could win more seats than Mamata Banerjee`s Trinamool Congress and Naveen Patnaik`s BJD respectively in these two states, which have traditionally yielded low returns for the BJP. The only states to resist the modi wave could be Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Punjab. In UP, the SP-BSP-RLD alliance was projected to win anywhere between 13 and 45 of the state`s 80 seats in the various polls. In Tamil Nadu, the DMK-led United Progressive Alliance was estimated to win a majority of the seats by most pollsters, but even here, NDA may make a bigger dent than was widely expected. Exit polls in India have had mixed track record with many going quite wrong.
