Modi asks G7 to support `One Earth One Health` |
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 12th June pushed the "one earth, one health" approach to effectively deal with the global COVID-19 pandemic. Modi sought the support of global leaders in the top grouping of G7 countries. To fight the pandemic. Modi said governments must lift patent protections for vaccines. During his virtual address to the G7 summit, Modi called for global unity, leadership, and solidarity to prevent future pandemics. Modi also emphasised the special responsibility of democratic and transparent societies to deal with the challenge. Modi`s call got support from German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Australia and several other countries also strongly supported Modi`s call to waive patents on vaccines and to boost production. India and South Africa had proposed this at the World Trade Organisation. Modi wants the G7 to support the proposal for a TRIPS (Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) waiver on Covid related technologies.”
