Modi assures Citizenship Amendment Act not anti-Muslim
India has clarified that no Indian citizens of any religion or any region will be robbed off his or her citizenship with the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act. The Government has urged people not to get misled by misinformation about this act. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that the Citizenship Amendment Act is just enabling legislation for persons belonging to six minority communities of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. It has been proposed on humanitarian grounds as these minorities had fled from these three countries due to persecution on the basis of their religion. It does not take away citizenship from anyone. Addressing a largely attended BJP Dhanyawad rally at Ramlila Grounds in New Delhi on Sunday, he appealed to the people to shun violence and not to damage public property. Modi said the Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens have nothing to do with the people of a particular religion. He dared his opponents to find anything discriminatory in his efforts while citing the government`s developmental programs. The Prime Minister dismissed the existence of any detention camps. He accused the opposition of playing vote bank politics by spreading such misinformation. He appealed to the youth not to fall prey to such rumours trying to divide the country.
