Modi grilled by Opposition on Trump statement |
Indian opposition parties came out in full force on Tuesday seeking Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s direct reply on US President Donald Trump``s claim that Modi had asked him to meditate in the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan. As the demand was not met, the parties staged a walkout from the lower house, Lok Sabha. Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha, Congress MP Manish Tewari sought Modi`s reply on this issue and asked whether the Prime Minister had made any request to Trump at the G-20 summit. Tewari said if this was the case then, "it is a very big stroke on India``s unity and sovereignty". Meanwhile Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said that the contentious issue between the two South Asian neighbours can never be resolved bilaterally. Imran Khan`s statement came hours after Donald Trump offered to be the "mediator" between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue as the two leaders met at the White House. Imran Khan, who is on a three-day official visit to the US, welcomed Donald Trump`s offer of mediation. "Bilaterally there will never be a resolution of the Kashmir dispute." India has not been engaging with Pakistan since an attack on the Air Force base at Pathankot in January of 2016 by Pakistan-based terrorists, maintaining that talks and terror cannot go together.
