Modi outlines India post COVID19 recovery |
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reiterated the need to resume economic activities as he held a meeting with them via video conferencing. The PM asked them to submit individual blueprints by May 15 on how they plan to deal with the “gradual easing of the lockdown” in their states. He also told them that resumption of train services on select routes was necessary to “rev up” economic activity even as he took note of the reservations expressed by some CMs on this count. Modi said, “I am of the firm view that the measures needed in the first phase of the lockdown were not needed during the second, and similarly, the measures needed in the third phase are not needed in the fourth.” While an extension of the lockdown beyond May 17 is on the cards, the Centre is keen to frame broad guidelines for the resumption of economic activities. However, the PM told the chief ministers that this time they will have to take the call on whether they want only containment areas or entire red zone districts shut for economic activity. The chief ministers appeared tentative on easing the lockdown, with many reluctant to open up their states for economic activities and many states wanted the lockdown to be extended till May 31, while some seemed to favour restricting the curbs to containment areas.
