Modi to celebrate Dev Diwali in Varanasi |
Dev Diwali or the Kartik Poornima and Guru Nanak Jayanti are being celebrated in Uttar Pradesh, with great enthusiasm and religious fervor on Tuesday. Dev Diwali is the `Festival of Lights of the Gods` and falls on the Kartik Purnima that is the full moon day, fifteen days after the celebrations of Diwali. It corresponds to the month of November-December in the Gregorian calendar. This religious ceremony is started by chanting of the holy Vedic mantras by the priests, lighting diyas at the ghats and the sparkling of firecrackers to welcome and please the Gods and Goddesses. Since early in the morning, lakhs of devotees continue to take a dip at the banks of the rivers across the state. A ritual bath in sacred water of rivers is known as Kartik Snana which is deemed as most auspicious on this occasion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting his parliamentary constituency Varanasi to participate in the `Dev Deepawali` celebration.
