Navratri with Garba and Dandiya dances |
Garba and Dandiya are believed to be the dramatization of the fight between the Goddess and the mighty Demon King, Mahishasur. The sticks of the Dandiya dance represent the sword of Goddess Durga. This is the reason why the dance form is also known as `The Sword Dance`. The dancers move on their feet to the rhythmic music of the dhol which is often the complementary percussion instrument to set feet tapping. Garba was traditionally performed around a big Garbha Deep, representing life just as a fetus in the mother`s womb. This dance form worships the divinity and power of Goddess Durga or Amba. It also represents the circle of life, which moves from life to death to rebirth, leaving only the Goddess Durga unmoved, unchanging and invincible. People at this festival prefer to wear dresses of similar colors and patterns to spread the message of oneness. Women prefer the traditional Chaniya Choli, that has vibrant colors and beautiful embroidery. Men wear traditional kurtas and pajamas.
