Nearly 230,000 Indians vaccinated for Covid-19 |
India, the biggest democracy in the world, started its vaccination drive for the Covid-19 virus on 16th January. The drive was launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Health Ministry says that in the first two days, a total of 224 thousand 301 beneficiaries have been vaccinated. Of which 207 thousand 229 beneficiaries were vaccinated on the first day. This is the highest day one vaccination number in the world and it is higher than in the UK, the US, and France. In these two days, a total of 447 Adverse Event Following Immunization ( AEFI) have been reported; of which only three required hospitalizations. Most of the AEFIs reported so far are minor like Fever, Headache, and Nausea. An AEFI is any unexpected medical occurrence that follows immunization which may not be related to the vaccine or vaccination process. Ever since congratulatory messages have been pouring in from leaders of various countries around the world. Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa congratulated Indian Prime Minister Modi on the launch of the COVID vaccination drive. Calling it an important step, Rajapaksa said that they are seeing the beginning of the end of the devastating pandemic. President of the Republic of Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih conveyed his congratulations to PM Modi and the Indian government. In a tweet, Solih expressed confidence that India will be successful in the endeavor to end the scourge of COVID-19. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson lauded India`s efforts regarding the production of Coronavirus vaccine and said, India already supplies more than 50 percent of the world`s vaccines, and the UK and India have worked closely together throughout the pandemic. Bhutan Prime Minister Lotay Tshering and Foreign Minister of Nepal Pradeep Kumar Gyawali have also congratulated PM Modi for the landmark launch of COVID-19 vaccination drive.
