New CM in Goa |
In an early morning development, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pramod Sawant was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Goa. The change of guard was necessitated by the death of 63-year-old Parrikar, who was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in February last year. After the sad demise of Manohar Parrikar, who breathed his last on Sunday evening, a political void had been developing in the state. The Congress Party has once again petitioned the governor to invite them to form the government in the state. The coalition with other parties in the state was only on the condition that the Govt should be headed by Manohar Parrikar and with him gone, the decision was pending which necessitated the step. Manohar`s death has brought down the BJP numbers in the state assembly from 13 to 12. But along with allies, they still have 20 lawmakers in the assembly, where the majority mark is at 19. Two deputy chief ministers – one each from alliance partners Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and Goa Forward Party (GFP) – were also picked in the crucial political transition.
