No support for Pak at UNHRC on Kashmir |
Pakistan has failed to secure the support of minimum 16 nations to move a resolution on Kashmir in the 47¬ member United Nations Human Rights Council. Thursday was the last day for bringing such an initiative during September 9¬27 UNHRC session and Pakistan did not file a request after it failed to garner the minimum support. Adoption of the resolution would have required a minimum of 24 votes. Pakistan had earlier claimed that it will gather support of more than 50 countries. Islamabad`s failure can be viewed as Delhi`s diplomatic victory. Meanwhile, foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale said on Thursday that PM Modi will not discuss its recent move to revoke Article 370 at the UN General Assembly. He said the PM would focus at the UN on what India was doing “for development, for security, for peace, and our expectations and aspirations of other countries”. Mr Gokhale also said that for India, there are several issues, “of development, climate change, other bilateral and multilateral issues”, adding “terrorism is definitely one such issue but the focus will not be on that”. New Delhi remains in touch with UNHRC members and hopes that support for its arguments would continue to remain intact. India`s first secretary in the permanent mission at the UNHRC, Kumam Mini Devi lashed out at Pakistan over its human rights record.
