North India air quality dips into hazardous zone |
India national capital New Delhi came out of the emergency status of its air quality thanks to some sporadic rains in some parts of the city. However, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, a thick layer of smog continues to engulf the city with the air quality index (AQI) reaching 473. The air quality at most monitoring stations was in the `severe` category as the national capital continued to grapple with its annual nightmare. On Friday, the Supreme Court-mandated Environment Pollution - Prevention and Control Authority had declared a health emergency and directed a slew of measures, including shutting down of schools and a complete ban on construction activities in Delhi and the neighboring satellite towns until November 5. On Monday morning, the Delhi government`s The Odd-Even Scheme started which will last for 12 days. The scheme is implemented annually, in order to curb vehicular pollution. Under the scheme, the vehicles with odd last digit registration number will be allowed on roads on odd dates and those with even last digit will ply on even dates. Violating the rule will incur a fine of four thousand rupees.
