Odisha, Telangana, Andhra state governments with BJP |
On thursday, BJP bagged a moral victory in the Parliament when the Right to Information Amendment bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha with the support of Biju Janata Dal, YSR Congress and Telangana Rashtra Samithi MPs voting in favour of the bill. Two PDP MPs too are believed to have supported the bill. With this it became clearer for the government, that they will be able to get outside support from these parties on like minded issues. The government also got a boost in confidence as the much debated Triple Talaq bill which had been stalled twice by the opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha, was passed in the Lok Sabha and will face the acid test in the Rajya Sabha now. In the Rajya Sabha, the opposition moved a motion to send the RTI amendment bill to a House select committee for further scrutiny but for the first time in the last six years that the government defeated an opposition resolution by 117 to 75 votes. The opposition alleged “intimidation” tactics by treasury benches to influence voting. The government also extended the duration of the ongoing Parliament session, earlier scheduled to end on Friday, until August 7.
