SC extends Ayodhya mediation panel till August |
The Supreme Court of India`s decision to send the vexed Ayodhya land dispute for mediation by a three-member panel headed by retired Supreme Court judge F M I Kalifulla appears to be bearing fruit with the panel expressed hope for a possible negotiated solution, although it is going to be long drawn process. The Supreme Court of India on Friday extended till August 15, the time for a panel of mediators, to explore an amicable solution to the politically sensitive Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute at Ayodhya. The panel in its report had sought extension of time till August 15 to complete mediation proceedings. On 8th March earlier this year, a bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S A Bobde, D Y Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer had appointed a panel under Justice Kalifulla, also comprising renowned mediator and senior advocate Sriram Panchu and spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. The panel has submitted two short reports, one in April detailing the parties they had spoken with and the second on May 7 informing the apex court about the proposed steps on more rounds of negotiation. The court has also directed that the mediation proceedings be held in-camera as per norms applicable to conduct mediation proceedings.
