Sharad Pawar meets Rahul Gandhi |
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar met Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday sparking speculations of a possible merger of the NCP with the Congress. In 1999, Sharad Pawar had created NCP as a breakaway faction of Congress over Sonia Gandhi`s nationality issue. A strong possibility of a merger has been doing rounds especially in the Delhi circles. Discussions were being held on the issue of Leader of Opposition and how the Congress was set to miss the bus yet again for which Congress needed 55 seats in the Lok Sabha but only has 52 seats. It was largely being felt that the Congress-NCP merger would ensure the seat to the Congress party.Amid the reports of a possible merger, speculations are rife that Sharad Pawar may also be chosen as the party president as Rahul Gandhi has been insistent on resigning as Congress party president post ever since the recent Lok Sabha poll debacle.
