Sikh Neurologist settles lawsuit |
A Sikh Indian American neurologist, who alleged that a Tennessee-based medical practice discriminated against him by asking about his religiously-mandated turban and beard during the hiring process, has settled a lawsuit against the company. Jaswinder Pal Singh had last December filed a religious discrimination lawsuit against Tennessee-based Premier Medical Group and its recruiter, Arthur Marshall. The Sikh Coalition did not disclose the terms of the settlement, including whether he was subsequently offered employment. It did state that Premier Medical Group has agreed to work with the Sikh Coalition to improve its employment hiring polices so that all qualified job candidates, regardless of their faith or background, will receive fair and equal treatment. As part of the agreement, the employer will strengthen its equal employment opportunity policies and retain an EEO consultant to provide anti-discrimination training for staff responsible for recruiting, interviewing and hiring employees, according to a press statement issued by the Sikh Coalition. The neurologist now practices at the Graves Gilbert Clinic in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
