Sonia helms Congress again as Interim President |
For Indian National Congress, India`s grand old party, that even if they want to try their loyalty and trust remains with the Gandhi family only. On Saturday, the Congress Working Committee came to the conclusion that the Congress could only be led by a member of Gandhi family. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi was thus somehow convinced to begin a second innings as Congress president, despite her having left the post two years ago, after holding office for 19 years. It took some persuasion, but in the end, the former president capitulated. It was only after 3 July, when Rahul Gandhi publicly stated his resignation from the post, that the Congress leadership began the process of finding an interim president. Even so, despite setting self-imposed deadlines, it took the CWC over five weeks to find an interim head. Despite the fact that Rahul had categorically stated, more than once, that the new leader would have to come from outside the family, Congress party members could not agree on someone else. Sonia Gandhi now will have to remain president for the next few months before elections for a new president can take place. Till then Mrs. Gandhi must prepare the party to meet the challenges of a raft of Assembly elections over this year and the next.
