Speculations rife as Amarinder meets Amit Shah |
Captain Amarinder Singh, who was forced to resign as Punjab Chief Minister recently amid a bitter internal Congress party feud, had an hour-long meet with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, setting off speculation about a change of camp. On record, he said they had discussed farmers` issues. Amarinder was forced to quit by the Congress top brass to placate Navjot Singh Sidhu. Speculation has been rife that he could either join the BJP or float his own party. There are also strong rumours that the BJP could give legal backing to minimum support price (MSP) as a middle way to assuage farmers` unions who have been protesting against the three farm laws and demanding a legal framework for MSP for over a year. If the Modi government decides to do this, many feel that it will ease Captain Singh`s entry in the BJP as he had been backing the farmer unions` demand. Political circles in the national capital are abuzz about a likely meeting for Amarinder with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president J.P. Nadda. With the BJP`s internal surveys in Punjab suggesting that the BJP is unlikely to cross 12-14 mark in the coming assembly polls, mainly due to farmers unions protests and leadership crisis, any deal with Captain Singh will be beneficial for the saffron party which also lost one of its oldest allies -- Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) -- in the state over the farm laws.
