Thousands of NRIs campaign for Modi in India |
With 3 of 7 phases of elections over, campaigning is in full swing for the remainder of the election process across India by all political parties. Other than the devoted campaigners of the parties, the election fever has caught up with NRI`s as well. Political parties are banking on the NRI`s to create favorable conditions for them from wherever they can. The most noticeable group is the one campaigning for Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the `NRI 4 NaMo` campaign. NRI is short for non-resident Indian, and NAMO is an acronym comprising the initials of the PM`s name. As was done in the run-up to the 2014 general election that saw BJP emerge victorious with 31% vote share, campaigns to support Modi and the BJP are being anchored by Overseas Friends of the Bharatiya Janata Party (OFBJP), which has chapters in at least 30 countries. Parties like Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and Aam Aadmi Party also bank on the NRI pool for raising money and manpower to strengthen campaigns.
