US assures India all help to fight COVID-19 |
US President Joe Biden on 27th April said that the United States is sending a whole series of help that India needs to battle against COVID-19, reiterating that India had done the same when the US was in need in 2020. Joe Biden had spoken at length with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 26th April and conveyed solidarity with India in its fight against the viral disease. Speaking to reporters at a White House news conference on 27th April, Biden said, "We are sending immediately a whole series of help that he needs, including providing for those Remdesivir and other drugs that are able to deal with this,". Gilead Sciences, the U.S. manufacturers of anti-viral drug Remdesivir, used in the treatment of COVID-19, has also announced that it will donate at least 450 thousand vials of the injection, under the brand name Veklury, to the Government of India, as the country is facing a shortage of the drug. Meanwhile, in a show of solidarity, CEOs of about 40 top American companies have come together to create a first-of-its-kind country-specific global task force to mobilize resources and coordinate efforts to help India fight the battle against COVID-19. A collective initiative of the US-India Business Council with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum and Business Roundtable, the task force during its meeting in Washington on April 26 committed to getting 20,000 oxygen concentrators to India in the next few weeks. The new U.S. public-private partnership aims to provide India with critical medical supplies, vaccines, oxygen, and other life-saving assistance amid an unprecedented surge in coronavirus cases. This partnership is called the `Global Task Force on Pandemic Response: MobilisingforIndia`. The task force also comprises representations from the retail sector, e-commerce, pharmaceutical, technology industry, and large manufacturing entities.
