US to secure India`s NSG membership |
The US on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to help India join the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). The US is working with partners to secure India`s Nuclear Suppliers Group membership, said Kenneth Juster, the American ambassador to India, in his inaugural policy speech. It is noteworthy that Juster went on to describe India as a "leading power" in the Indo-Pacific region. India is a leading power in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond. For India and the US, Indo-Pacific is vital for the security and prosperity of our people as well as others. Together we want to ensure a free and open region, where rule of law and democratic principles are reflected, he said. Juster was at pains to clarify that `America First` and `Make in India` were "not incompatible." Instead, he said, the two had the potential to be "mutually beneficial, increase economic interactions and volume of trade." In fact, he went as far as to suggest that India emerge an as "alternative hub" to China for US businesses in the region. He also echoed President Donald Trump`s belief that India play a bigger role in Afghanistan, even as he stressed that the situation would not improve till "Pakistan does not contribute positively.
