Yeddyurappa waits for crowning in Karnataka |
The political crisis in the Indian state of Karnataka is far from over as the Bharatiya Janata Party which won the floor test, has to still clear many hurdles before it can stake claim to form the government. BJP`s government-formation attempts slipped into the slow lane as the party is now waiting for signals from the top leadership before taking its next step. The central leadership is expected to send an observer from New Delhi to witness the entire process. The biggest test for the BJP involves the fate of rebel lawmakers` disqualification. Assembly speaker KR Ramesh Kumar is yet to make a decision on the 15 rebels` resignation letters. Until the speaker announces his ruling, the BJP continues to be the single largest entity, but still does not have majority in the 225-member assembly. For now, BJP has vote of 105 MLAs against the ruling coalition`s 100 MLAs including speaker and nominated member. If the rebels are disqualified, then the majority mark slips down to 106 and BJP is banking on Independent MLAs, who did not participate in the trust vote, to support them.
