Yogis of 92 Nations at Parmarth Niketan for International Yoga Festival |
The 29th annual International Yoga Festival began 1st March 2018 at Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh, drawing 1,500 participants from 92 nations, besides 80 globally revered saints, yogacharyas, and experts. Ashtanga Yoga, Raja Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Bharat Yoga, Ganga Yoga, and Somatics Yoga were a few of the nearly 200 different offerings during the week-long fest. Drawing inspiration from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi the festival has scaled. Yoga, once an art restricted only to the sages of the Himalayas, is now practiced by 300 million people worldwide. Swami Chidanand Saraswati, President of Parmarth Niketan, says “Yoga is all the way from the United Nations to the United Creations on the banks of Ganga!” The 2018 festivals was inaugurated by the Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu, and dignitaries included Indian Tourism Minister, Governor and Chief Minister of Uttarakhand state, and Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswatiji, Festival Director. The inauguration event saw a colorful tapestry of participants representing the world`s faiths, nations, cultures, races and regions on the banks of the sacred River Ganga. Vice President Naidu heartily congratulated Swamiji and Sadhviji for a beautiful global festival to propagate the message that one must preserve nature and culture to pave the way for a collective future.
