A bi-partisan Congress and members of the Indian American community lauded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s June 8 address to a joint session of Congress in Washington, D.C. An estimated 500 Indian Americans — invited by members of Congress — sat in the House gallery to watch Modi’s hour-long speech. The affable prime minister gave several shout-outs to the diaspora community during his address. Indian American community activist M.R. Rangaswami — who also attended the U.S. India BusinessCouncil’s annual gala a day earlier, where Modi was the chief guest — said it was an emotional moment for the crowd when Modi discussed the achievements of the Indian American community and the contributions they have made towards a successful India-U.S. partnership on economic, defense and social issues.Discussing the future of the U.S.-India relationship once President Barack Obama’s term ends in December, Rangaswami said the partnership would continue, regardless of who becomes the next president. “here were so many line items agreed upon — in defense, trade, renewable energy — it would take a lot to unravel that relationship.
