Ex-CBI chief Sinha interfered with coal scam cases |
There is enough evidence to show that then CBI chief Ranjit Sinha "interfered" with investigations into key coal scam cases, the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) has told the court. The SIT is headed by former CBI special director M L Sharma. The SIT`s finding is based on an analysis of chargesheets filed by the CBI in coal scam cases during Sinha`s tenure as director. The SIT requested the court for access to the coal scam case preliminary enquiries (PEs) which were closed on Sinha`s irections. Under the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, the CBI chief is empowered to close a PE.The finding is sure to raise questions whether Sinha used the powers vested in the CBI chief to interfere with the chargesheets in sensitive cases, such as the one concerning the allocation of Talabira-II coal mine to Hindalco. Advocate Prashant Bhushan`s charge that the probe into the coal scam cases had been subverted was based on allegations that the `visitors diary` kept at then CBI director Ranjit Sinha`s official residence showed several accused visited the sleuth when the chargesheets were being drawn.
