Exciting time for Diaspora |
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is hoping to engage Indian Americans to cement the growing U.S.-India relationship, says Rep. Ami Bera who traveled to India with President Barack Obama to attend the Republic Day festivities January 26. Bera said there is a genuine chemistry between Obama and Modi. This should be a very exciting time for the Indian Diaspora, feels the US lawmaker. Bera is an American congressman, who is beginning his second term in office. Bera is the new co-chair of the House India Caucus. Bera said the delegation had several `one-on-one` meetings with Modi and also attended a CEO conference attended by Indian and Indian American business leaders. Bera comes from the Sacramento region in California state that was well represented at the CEO summit. Vivek Ranadive, founder and CEO of TIBCO, who co-shares ownership of the Sacramento Kings basketball team, also attended the summit, along with representatives from UC Davis. On his first trip in 2013, the sole Indian American in Congress focused on food storage and safety issues, inking Memorandums of Understanding between UC Davis and Indian agricultural institutions. This time, Bera focused on cold storage – getting food to marketplaces before it spoils – and technology related to increasing water supplies. Food and water in India represent two major markets for U.S. companies. According to Bera, the delegation was less successful on concretizing deliverables related to climate change and alternative energy, including nuclear power.
