Heat wave this summer |
The year 2015 was the third warmest year since 1901, but 2016 is not expected to provide much relief. In its first summer outlook for the country, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared that the entire country will experience higher than normal temperatures. Temperatures over northwest India are expected to be more than 1° Celsius above normal. Core heat wave zone states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Telangana and Met subdivisions of Marathwada, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra and coastal Andhra Pradesh are all set to face severe heat wave conditions in the coming months. The country experiences hot weather season primarily during April to June. During this season, many parts of the country experience heat wave conditions (days with abnormally warmer temperatures) with many adverse consequences. Abnormally above-normal temperatures can have devastating effects on human health, water resources and power generation and outage. There is a marked relationship between human mortality and thermal stress,” said Dr S Pai, senior scientist of IMD Pune.
