India celebrates AFRICA DAY with envoys |
On 26 May 2016 in New Delhi, the Ministry of External Affairs of India assured the African envoys of the safety of thousands of African students in India after the gruesome death of a Congolese student in a violent fight with Indian youth. African envoys eventually didn`t boycott the Africa Day celebrations by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, a wing of the Ministry. Minister of State Gen (Retd) V K Singh assuaged their feelings over the cold-blooded murder of Congolese student Masunda Olivier. ‘Prejudice and racism’ against Africans in India was the common reference in the speeches of the African Ambassadors. Striking a poignant note, the Ambassador of Ghana, H.E. Samuel P Yalley, recited a poem in memory of Olivier. At a conference under the slogan ‘India and Africa: Bonding Together’, many African envoys and Indian strategists discussed trade and development issues. H.E. Sola Enikanolaiye, acting high commissioner of Nigeria, stressed on Track II diplomacy, which is mainly among non-government stakeholders, to remove ‘stereotypes and prejudices’. African envoys said numerous incidents have happened in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Goa and Delhi recently.
