India registered a convincing 109-run victory against a listless Bangladesh at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on March 19 to reach the semifinals of the World Cup. India joins South Africa in the semifinals. Chasing a stiff target of 303 runs, Bangladesh were bowled out for 193 in 45 overs as India registered an emphatic victory. India will either face Australia or Pakistan in the semifinal at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Bangladesh started cautiously but the Indian bowlers kept making regular breakthroughs to keep the opposition batsmen on the backfoot. Regular wickets combined with some tight bowling meant the run-rate kept climbing which in the end proved too much for the Tigers as their World Cup campaign came to an end. Indian opener Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina rescued India from early trouble with a century stand to set Bangladesh a challenging 303-run target. Rohit blasted his seventh one-day century with 137 off 126 balls while Raina smashed 65 from 57 balls to boost the defending champions on a flat pitch. The pair rescued India from a shaky 115 for three in the 28th over with a 122-run partnership. Some lusty late hitting nudged India`s total beyond 300 with two balls left when such a score unlikely at the half-way stage of their innings. No side have made more than 300 batting second to win a one-day international at the MCG. Bangladesh played their first World Cup quarterfinal.
