India raises NSG, Masood with Chinese FM |
India and China conducted the first discussion on India`s NSG bid after China blocked India at the NSG plenary in Seoul. Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi`s visit on Aug 13 showed how far India and China remain on the important issues, and the implications it could have in future.After a three-hour discussion with Sushma Swaraj, it was decided to set up two new dialogue mechanisms: a conversation between India`s joint secretary (disarmament), Amandeep Gill and Wang Qun, China`s chief nuclear negotiator on the NPT issue which China is using as a block against India; secondly a dialogue between foreign secretary S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Zhang Yesui on bilateral relations. Chinese foreign minister focused on getting India`s cooperation at the forthcoming multilateral summits like G-20, BRICS, East Asia Summit etc in the coming months. Wang spoke at length about the rising tide of protectionism in developed countries, and the areas of common interest between China and India in the contemporary international context.
