India seeks flexibility |
As the ongoing climate talks officially spilled over to December 13 with countries unable to reach a consensus after overnight negotiations, India said one-sided efforts from developing countries was not enough and said the success of the Paris conference would hinge on "flexibility and spirit of accommodation" of the developed world. India`s environment minister Prakash Javadekar said, India and many developing countries are trying hard so that 700 crore people of this world get an effective global agreement. The hurdles are there because the developed countries have not shown flexibility...The success of Paris will depend on the flexibility and the spirit of accommodation of the developed nations". Javadekar`s strong statement came as leaders worked round-the-clock to agree on a final draft text of the agreement which was supposed to come on December 11. It will now be released at 9 am (1.30 PM IST) on December 12. Thereafter, the leaders will assemble again to discuss it before moving for its adoption. Javadekar once again met US secretary of state John Kerry. He even made the effort of procuring a huge bouquet to greet Kerry on his birthday. Such bonhomie apart, India made it clear that New Delhi would work hard along with other developing countries including China to get a deal which has the interests of the poor at its heart.
