India to allow E-visa for Chinese |
Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s government seems set to overrule objections raised by intelligence agencies and clear E-tourist visa facility for China ahead of Modi`s visit to Beijing very soon. A high-level meeting on May 6 to decide on extension of the facility to China remained inconclusive, but Delhi seems to be in favour of approving the friendly gesture without further delay. The meeting - attended by home secretary L C Goyal and brass of the foreign ministry, RAW and IB -- mainly related to overstay by Chinese citizens in India as well as past instances of some taking to spying. RAW and IB wanted to put off the announcement until after the PM`s visit, allowing India to assess China`s willingness to reciprocate the measure. The issue of stapled visas by China to residents of Arunachal Pradesh remains an irritant. Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju had made it clear that e-tourist visa facility was not reciprocal.
