Indian-American kids dominate |
It`s common knowledge now that Indian-American kids dominated the US National Spelling Bee Championship, the final round of which begins in Washington DC soon. The Indian-American dominance now extends to the companion National Geographic Bee contests too. Seven of the 10 finalists who qualified the preliminary rounds were of Indian-origin. The 10 finalists are:· Kapil Nathan — Alabama; · Rishi Nair — Florida; · Rishi Kumar — Maryland;· Saketh Jonnalagadda — Massachusetts; · Lucas Eggers — Minnesota;· Grace Rembert — Montana;· Samanyu Dixit — North Carolina;· Ashwin Sivakumar — Oregon;· Pranay Varada — Texas; Thomas Wright — Wisconsin. The winners of the Geographic Bee title in the last four years, starting 2012, have been Indian-American students. Rahul Nagvekar in 2012, Sathwik Karnik in 2013, Akhil Rekulapelli in 2014, and Karan Menon in 2015.The top 10 finishers in 2016 — from the field of 54 state-level champions who took part in the prelims — will compete in the final round to be held at the National Geographic Society in Washington, DC, on May 25. The winner of the 28th annual National Geographic Bee title will get a $50,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society.
