Modi buys France fighter jets |
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wooed the French April 10th and 11th, on his maiden visit after assuming office and the 2-day event seems as big as the famous Cannes Film Festival. Modi cleared the long-pending purchase of Rafale fighter jets, arrived closer to a nuclear energy agreement with French President Francois Hollande in Paris and won France`s backing for India`s inclusion as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Two hectic days of diplomacy included tea on a boat ride on the Seine river, visit to the Airbus Industrie plant, addressing UNESCO at the Paris headquarters and meeting with the representatives of the 300,000-strong Indian Diaspora. Areva and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) took the first concrete steps towards making the Jaitapur nuclear power plants a reality with both companies signing an early works agreement. This will be the first formal pact between the two sides for Areva to begin work on the planned six EPR (evolutionary power reactor) power plants. A far more important agreement was signed between L&T and Areva opening the door to nuclear manufacturing in India.
