Modi steers Lanka away from China |
India and Sri Lanka signed four agreements March 13 during the maiden visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Colombo, the first by an Indian premier in 28 years. Modi`s olive branch included a bunch of deals to steer the strategic island neighbor away from what was seen as a growing affinity to China during the regime of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Modi stopped in Sri Lanka as the final stop of his three-nation tour of Indian Ocean island nations. He met Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, who was in India in February on his first foreign trip after assuming office in January. The Prime Minister said his meeting with Sirisena has been very productive and it gives him confidence and optimism about the future of relations between the two countries.
