Nepal quake toll perhaps 15,000 |
Miraculous pullouts of a teenage boy and a woman alive lifted the gloom on a rainy day on April 30th in quake hit Nepal, but three fresh aftershocks kept people on the edge. Nepal`s Army Chief said that the death toll in the quake could be as high as 15,000. A long silence followed by a round of cheers went up when 15-year-old Pemba Lama was brought out of the rubble of a seven-storey building. Relief operations were hit due to rains and tremors measuring between 3.9 and 4.7 on the Richter Scale. India`s state owned General Insurance Corporation has said that it has a Rs 882-crore ($140 million) exposure to Nepal but expects a loss of only around Rs 310 crore ($50 million) in the worst-case scenario. GIC chairman AK Roy said it will take some time to arrive at any estimated figure of losses due to the recent earthquake .
