PIO is Portugal PM |
Mr K.N.Gupta, former India Liasion director of the Global Organisation of the People of India International, has congratulated and welcomed Mr António Costa who has become Prime Minister of Portugal. Costa has been a trailblazer throughout his career. He is the son of fiercely anticolonial Goan writer Orlando da Costa, whose signature novel ‘The Sign of Anger’ is a Portuguese-language classic set in South Goa. He studied law before entering politics in the 1990s. Soon, Costa became minister of parliamentary affairs and was later promoted to justice minister. In 2004 European elections he led the Socialist Party list and was elected vice -president of the European Parliament. The announcement of his premiership by President AnÃbal Cavaco Silva caps a political drama that saw Costa’s coalition with green, communist and leftist parties vote down a conservative government that held office for just 11 days. That shortest administration was replaced by the first-ever leftist alliance since the country transitioned to democracy four decades ago.In 2007, Costa made a significant gamble to run for Lord Mayor of Lisbon, the troubled centrepiece of a sprawling urban area that is home to nearly 30% of Portugal’s population.
