Quake kills 1000 in Nepal, 30 in India |
On April 25th just before 12 noon local time, a massive earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale with epicenter in Nepal rocked the mountain nation and half of India from its northern to eastern and central parts. Unconfirmed reports said the quake killed nearly 1000 in Nepal, perhaps 30 in India, injured hundreds and caused significant devastation in Nepal and Indian states bordering it. India`s deaths were reported mostly from Bihar. There were at least 15 aftershocks of 4.5 magnitude and higher in Nepal, according to U.S. Geological Survey. Thousands in Nepal were displaced and hospitals crowded with dead and injured. Residents, terrorized by a series of strong aftershocks, huddled outdoors. Historic buildings in Kathmandu lay in rubble on the ground. The earthquake struck near Lamjung in Nepal, about 80 kilometers northwest of the capital, Kathmandu. The tremors, were felt in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bhutan, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh. The quake lasted for a minute, triggering panic and forcing people to rush out of their houses and offices.There were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property in Delhi.Officials said Metro train services in Delhi were also affected due to the earthquake.The quake was 2 km deep.
