Stiff fines on riding drunk on Metro |
India isn`t far behind. Eating or littering inside Metro trains may attract Rs 1,000 fine and the offenders may even be taken out of the coaches. The proposed Unified Metro Rail Bill, which is being finalised, also suggests steep increase in fine for people entering Metro trains in “drunken or intoxicated” state from the present Rs 500 to Rs 10,000. Similar fine of Rs 10,000 has been proposed for commuters found carrying offensive or dangerous materials, sources said. For offenders caught walking on the Metro track, the proposed penalty and fine is up to three months imprisonment and or fine of Rs 5,000 .There is also a proposal to increase the fine substantially for offenders carrying out any demonstration or protest in Metro rail complexes to Rs 15,000 fine and/or imprisonment up to six months. People wonder how the same yardstick for both a drunk person misbehaving and someone behaving responsibly while travelling. Truly speaking, the urban development ministry is preparing the proposed bill that will be applicable to all Metro projects across India.
