Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan at Glenwood Gurdwara |
Vaisakhi is a popular festival celebrated all around the world as it marks the start of the Punjabi New Year. Vaisakhi also known as Baisakhi, takes place each year in the month of April, either on the 13th or 14th. There are two different elements to Vaisakhi – firstly it refers to the harvest festival in the Punjab region of India, and secondly it marks the day of the establishment of the Khalsa in 1699. The word “Khalsa” means pure, and to join, Sikhs must undergo the initiation known as the Amrit ceremony. This day is also observed by the farming community of Punjab as a day of thanks giving and paying tribute to God for their future prosperity. The management of Glenwood Gurdwara in Sydney organised Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan and Open Day on Saturday, 22 April 2017.The entire community was invited to share in the Sikh culture while celebrating the new year, prayer, spiritual singing and Langar (vegetarian food). The Nagar Kirtan (Procession) was led by Panj Piaras (Five Beloved) followed by a decorated Van carrying Guru Granth Sahib (Holi Book of Sikhs) from the Nishan Sahib of the Gurdwara passing through the car park, then from one gate to the another gate on Meurants Lane, Glenwood and religious hyms from Guru Granth Sahib were recited.Large number of sangat participated and offered their prayers.
