Vardhan launches ‘Solar Power Tree’ |
India`s Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Harsh Vardhan on July 22 launched the 5 KW `Solar Power Tree` which is an innovation aimed at utilising minimum land to harness maximum Solar Energy. It has been developed by the CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-CMERI), a constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).CSIR-CMERI, Durgapur, has designed and developed a Solar Power Tree to help harness maximum solar energy utilising minimum land. The device aims to address the biggest hurdle of getting a piece of land of desired size to harness green energy. The `solar tree` is made out of photovoltaic panels at a cost of Rs 3 lakh each. The `tree`, which will require less than 4 sqft space, can power about five households. Earlier, Dr Harshvardhan, during his maiden visit to Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) at Durgapur, had inaugurated the `Solar tree` developed by chief scientist of CSIR-CMERI Dr Sibnath Maity . Dr Maity had then announced that two `trees` will be installed at the office of the ministry of science and technology and Dr Harshvardhan`s bungalow in New Delhi in July 2016.
