Youngest Indian gets hi tech heart stent |
Nine-year-old Deepa Gupta became the youngest Indian to get a bio absorbent stent that saved her life. Deepa could not run back home from school, or play. Every time she ran, played or walked a bit longer than usual, she would clutch at her chest like heart disease patients decades older than her. Doctors in Mumbai found she suffered from a rare disease that had resulted in deposits of soft plaque in her left main artery and caused a 90% blockage. She underwent angioplasty and a hi-tech stent — a tiny mesh-like device to keep arteries open — was put. The stent cost Rs. 190,000 or US$ 3,000, but Deepa got it free!
