New law for NRI-marriage related issues |
The government of India is in the process of framing a new law to tackle problems in Non-Resident Indian (NRI) marriages, particularly in reference to the issue of NRI husbands abandoning their wives in India and getting married illegally abroad. Under the proposed new law, `Summons and Warrants Against Indian People Living Abroad`, deterrent measures to punish such NRI`s may be applied, like confiscating their property and cancelling of their passports. Word of the impending legislation was revealed by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on July 27 while she was addressing a seminar on "NRI marriages and trafficking of women and children". The new legislation would be tabled during the next session of Parliament. The Union Minister further added that it will not only cancel the passport but also confiscate the property. And NRIs who don`t return, their property could be sold to give financial aid to their aggrieved wives. The government will have to make some amendments in the Code of Criminal Procedure.
