Southern California school wins 8th Academic Decathlon |
The academic decathlon team at El Camino Real Charter High School in Woodland Hills, Calif., which included an Indian American student, Inesh Ahuja, won the 2018 U.S. Academic Decathlon, held April 19-21 in Frisco, Texas. This is the school`s eighth national championship. They beat out schools not only from the U.S. but also from Canada, China and the U.K. With a score of 54,531.2 out of 60,000 points, the team set yet another record for the highest score accrued at the national competition. The eight-student team won 55 individual medals, captured the Division One title, and also ranked first in the Super Quiz. The winning team also included Maya Teitz, Rachel Markenson, Nolan Origer, Matthew Fitzmorris, Avery Tamura, Trevor Winnard, and Briana Lincoln.At the annual competition, hundreds of students were tested in ten categories: art, economics, music, literature, mathematics, science, social science, speech, interview, and essay. The culmination of the decathlon was a Super Quiz relay, which includes multiple-choice questions from all subjects.This year`s theme was `Africa.` The theme for the 2018–2019 academic decathlon is `The 1960s: A Transformational Decade.`
