1,000 plus COVID-19 in India, 7 dead |
India has reported a spurt in COVID-19 cases that jumped to 1,009 the week of 26 May 2025, with 752 new cases and seven deaths. Though, authorities also said 305 people were cured or discharged. COVID-19 cases were just 257 on May 19 . States of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra reported a spike in cases. India Health Ministry reported COVID variants, NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, in the country. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified both LF.7 and NB.1.8 subvariants as Variants Under Monitoring (VUMs), not as Variants of Concern (VOCs) or Variants of Interest (VOIs). China and other parts of Asia also reported an increase of the same variants. The Indian government said it had a robust countrywide surveillance system in place for COVID-19 and other respiratory disorders. It is called the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) monitored by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR). Most such cases were reported as mild and could be cured at home. Also, these COVID-19 variants are not more transmissible or cause more severe disease compared to the previously circulating variants.
