77 new eco-tourism sites in Himachal state of India |
India`s northern state of Himachal Pradesh will develop 77 new eco-tourism sites, according to state Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. India`s federal government has given a major boost to eco resorts and eco tourism. States are following suit. Himachal announced a nee Eco-Tourism Policy, among them 77 sites within various forest circles. State hopes to earn US$ 25 million over the next five years. Tourism can work while preserving the environment, creating local employment, and fostering sustainable economic growth, says the policy. Himachal Pradesh is known for its snow-capped peaks, dense forests, pristine rivers, and rich biodiversity. It`s a favourite among domestic and foreign nature lovers. The 77 eco-tourism sites will be spread in regions of Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Bilaspur, Rampur, Solan, Nahan, Hamirpur, Nalagarh, Dharamshala, Palampur, Chamba, Dalhousie, Nurpur, and Rekong Peo. Operators have already been appointed for seven prominent locations, and other sites are being developed in phases. Eco-friendly activities in these sites will focus on trekking, bird watching, forest camping, jungle walks, homestays, and nature interpretation trails. Local community involvement is a key to preserving each forest circle. Local youth are being trained as nature guides and multi-purpose workers. More than 100 forest rest houses and campsites can now be booked online. A trekking management system has been introduced, with over 245 routes categorized by difficulty. A dedicated mobile app is also in development to assist tourists.
